Rental Price Calculator

Guide

This calculator helps estimate the total vehicle rental cost, including daily hire charges and any additional mileage fees.

1. Base Rental Cost

The base rental cost is calculated by multiplying the daily rental rate by the number of rental days selected.

2. Included Mileage Allowance

Most rentals include a set number of free miles per day. Driving within this allowance will not incur additional mileage charges.

3. Excess Mileage Charges

If your total mileage exceeds the included allowance, extra miles are charged at the specified per-mile rate.

4. Total Rental Estimate

The calculator combines the base rental amount and any excess mileage charges to provide an estimated total rental cost.

5. Important Tip

Estimate your expected mileage as accurately as possible to avoid unexpected excess mileage fees when returning the vehicle.

Rental Pricing Explained (UK)

UK rental pricing combines daily hire rates and mileage-based charges.

1. What is included in the base "Total Price"?

Most reputable UK calculators show an "all-in" price including VAT (20%), basic third-party insurance, and mandatory local taxes. However, you should explicitly state if optional fees (like child seats) or location surcharges (like airport fees) are missing from the initial estimate.

2. How much is the security deposit and insurance excess?

Security Deposit: Expect a hold on your credit card of £200 to £500 for standard cars, rising to £1,000+ for premium models.

Insurance Excess: Even with standard insurance, you are usually liable for the first £500 to £2,000 of damage. You can reduce this by buying "excess protection" at the desk or from a cheaper third-party insurer.

3. Are there extra fees for drivers under 25 or over 75?

Yes. Drivers aged 21–24 almost always pay a "Young Driver Surcharge," typically between £30 and £50 per day. Some firms cap this at 10 days per rental. Drivers over 75 may face similar "Senior Driver" fees or be restricted from certain car classes.

4. Is there a mileage limit?

While most major UK rentals offer unlimited mileage for short trips, some (especially for luxury or electric cars) may cap you at 90–300 miles per day. Excess miles are typically charged at £0.20 to £1.10 per mile.

5. How much does an additional driver cost?

Adding another driver usually costs £10 to £15 per day. This covers the insurance risk of a second person behind the wheel.

6. What is the fuel policy?

The standard is "Full-to-Full": you pick up the car full and must return it full. If you don't, the rental company will charge you a significantly higher refuelling rate plus an admin fee.

7. Is there an "Airport Surcharge"?

Sometimes. So ask ahead of booking. Picking up from a "Premium Location" like Heathrow or Gatwick often adds a fee (sometimes called a "Location Service Charge") that can be £30–£40 or a percentage of the total rental.

8. How much do "optional extras" cost?

Child Seats: Approx. £10–£15 per day, often capped at a maximum per rental.

GPS/Sat Nav: Often £15+ per day, though many modern cars now have this built-in or via Apple CarPlay/Android Auto for free.

9. Are one-way rental fees included?

If you drop the car at a different city from where you started, a "One-Way Fee" will apply. This ranges from £50 to £200+ depending on the distance between the branches.

10. Does the price change if I book in advance?

Absolutely. Booking 3 to 6 months in advance is significantly cheaper than a last-minute booking. Prices are dynamic and rise as "fleet availability" drops, especially during UK summer holidays

11. Do I need a credit card, or can I use a debit card?

In the UK, most major rental companies (like Hertz or Avis) require a credit card in the lead driver's name to hold the security deposit. While some are starting to accept debit cards, they often require you to buy their most expensive "premium insurance" (Zero Excess) to waive the need for a large deposit hold. If you only have a debit card, expect a higher upfront cost or a more rigorous credit check at the counter.
